Lately I’ve been taking stock of my life, what I’ve accomplished, what I’ve created, what I’ve survived… and I realize that I haven’t given myself enough credit. I never have. And I don’t think most black women do. I think most of us have just always done what we needed to do to move through life, rarely considering the energy, strength, resourcefulness, faith and pure grit it’s taken to get to this point in life. And if you’ve gotten here without becoming hardened or jaded, you have that much more to be proud of. It’s time to pat yourself on the back.

It’s time to appreciate all you have to offer the world and all you’ve done to navigate it. Even if you feel like you’re not where you want to be, you’re still here. You’re still in the game. You haven’t given up. And if you haven’t given up by now you probably won’t. And that’s a big deal.

Facing the world everyday isn’t always easy and doing so while keeping dreams in your heart, even the ones you’ve tucked away deep, deep inside, takes courage. And courage is an accomplishment. It’s great to have degrees and trappings, but let’s also celebrate the character that has been built, the wisdom that has been gained and the spirit that may have been diminished at times, but has remained buoyant. Those intangible attributes are achievements and deserve recognition. You deserve to take credit for all that you’ve done and all that you’ve become, even if you thought it would be something else. You’ve made the best of whatever it is.

So as we start our week, let’s begin with hearts full of pride for all we’ve come through, all we’ve done, all we have yet to do and all that we currently are.
